Expectations High For Lady Eagles
Jasper Volleyball has very high expectations for this season. The district championship team is returning all starters from last season, and not losing any seniors. The 25-win team opens the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday, August 29th, against Golden City at 5:30. “I believe we will be a competitive team this season. Our schedule looks to be competitive as well. We didn't lose any seniors last season. We have most of our starting lineup back.” said coach Brianna Vinson. “The girls ended their season losing to Drexel at the sectional game. They have set a lot of personal and team goals this year, one of them being to go farther than they did last year. We also came up short at attaining a conference championship and we are excited to get another opportunity at winning our conference this season as well. We will work on defensive coverage and a quicker offense to help us meet several of our goals.” commented coach Vinson. We also asked about the values of the team this year, which coach Vinson responded with, “We have really encouraged the girls to work on their mental toughness this season. It's a game skill and a life skill. I want the team to embrace the great times and the hardships. We always enjoy the wins, but the losses, they teach us so much. We like to keep mistakes to a minimum, but we also like these athletes to learn that they can handle tough situations and grow through them.” We are very excited to see what this team can do this year, and hope that they can make a further push in the playoffs.
Eagle Cross Country Makes Strides
Coach Donna Davis has high expectations for the cross country team this year. Davis, entering her 9th season as head coach, is excited about the possibilities this group presents. “This year we look forward to racing as a team and seeing how we can come through in the Conference and District Championships,” Davis commented. The Eagles return junior LeLand Harris, who qualified for state last year, as well as classmate Lincoln Moss, who just missed the qualifying mark. Other athletes on the team this year include senior Stein Anzjon, junior Brody Gordon, and freshman Austyn Moss, who had a successful season at the junior high level last year.
“Our goal is always to improve and become the best version of ourselves” Davis said. Davis noted a big part of that is Erin Osborne, who provides amazing support and encouragement for the entire program. “She fills the role of assistant and goes well beyond that title to make our program the best version of itself,” Davis said of Osborne. 8th grader Phin Manko and 7th Dustin Baker complete the Cross Country program as junior high competitors. The Eagles will make their maiden run of the year at Neosho on August 26th.
